These guided workshops will take the art journey outside. A variety of supplies will be provided for each walk, however, participants are welcome to bring their own materials if they wish.

These guided workshops will take us through a variety of art related activities in the outdoors. Participants will engage in locating public art installations, identifying artistic expression in neighborhoods, observing nature or architecture, discussing trends or themes and practicing basic drawing skills. , Basic sketching supplies will be provided for each walk. Participants are welcome to bring their own materials as they see fit.

Journey C7 - Repurposed Books as Journals
April 15, 22, 29 (3 Saturdays) No class April 1 (Spring Break) and 8 (Easter)
11:30am - 1:00pm (extended time by 15 minutes from the usual time)
Students will repurpose an old hardcover children's book to express thoughts and ideas. We will explore journal backgrounds and the many different mediums/materials that can inspire the endless possibilities of your artistic journey. Many different art techniques will be practiced during this session. Participants will create single and double page journal style layouts as a ground for personal artworks and memory journals.
Students will be supplied with a used book for their work and all related materials will be provided.

Youth Age 10-16
YOUTH OPEN STUDIO - Tuesday Evenings
6:00 - 7:30pm - YOUTH - $ 5 drop in fee
Students are invited to come and use the studio space to spend time with any of their ongoing works such as: repurposed books (art journals), artist trading cards or drawing practice. There will be no formal instruction during this time but instructor guidance is a natural part of this process. General materials will be provided. Students are encouraged to bring any specific mediums or materials they may need during this time.

Journey 11 WEAVING - 1 Project
April 15, 22, 29 (3 Saturdays) No class April 1 (Spring Break) and 8 (Easter)
1:30 - 3:00 (NOTE: This class is only 1.5 hours, rather than the 2.0 in previous sessions!)
FOCUS: Textiles, Environmental Inspiration, Themes
Students will work on one project that will be a culmination of finding a theme, inspiration, or expression of a current event, choosing related materials and working with a variety of weaving techniques.

Use this Open Studio time to progress with any of your ongoing works, within a collaborative environment... or just grab a coffee and chat with other inspirational humans... it's good for the soul.
What projects are you working on? Journaling, Painting, Drawing, Artist Trading Cards, Watercolour, Stitching? You are encouraged to bring all items you need for your process, but if you have any special requests, please just ask upon registration.

Journey 1 - DRAWING
That's What You THINK!
In this drawing series, learn to draw what you really see... not what you think you see. A nature focused intensive to find pattern, texture and line in nature. The natural world around us is beautiful, but it gets really mind-blowing when you look deeply at nature's artwork. Let's look... and draw!
$10 WORTH of quality art supplies will remain with the student

Journey 2 - ARTIST TRADING CARDS
What makes a great clubhouse sandwich? Layers of delicious flavours of course! What makes a great artist trading card? Layers of interesting mediums of course! Use these small grounds (2.5" x 3.5" cards) to learn how to create interest and depth in artworks. Students will complete this session with at least 1 plastic pocket of 9 artist trading cards.

Journey 4 - SCULPTURE PROJECT
Students will learn how to build an armature and create an abstract sculpture finished with acrylic paint. A collaborative cardboard sculpture will also be part of this journey. All materials provided.
No experience necessary.
Journey 5 PAPER BATIK
FOCUS: Alberta Landscapes, Composition, Proportion, Artist Statement
Students will work on two projects. One, an abstract piece using inspiration from "How Things Move" (wheels, birds, kids, appliances etc...). Two, a landscape piece focusing on Alberta landscapes (prairies, rocky mountains, farms, lakes etc...). Artists will write a statement to describe the process for one of their projects.
Journey 6 PICASSO STUDY
FOCUS: Picasso's Work, Themes, Art Critique, Painting
Students will work on two projects. One, after viewing several photographs of Picasso throughout his life, students will do a pencil/charcaol portrait of Picasso. Two, a monochromatic guitar featuring geometric shapes using tempera paint.
Journey 7 WATERCOLOUR - Techniques & 2 Projects
FOCUS: Techniques, Watercolour Vocabulary, Explore Materials
Students will work on two projects. One, an abstract piece focusing on repetition, shape and brushwork. Two, a botanical/floral piece using specific brushstrokes and wet on dry technique.
Journey 8 ARTIST TRADING CARDS
FOCUS: Creativity, Mixed Media, Recycled Materials, Dazzling Techniques
Students will explore endless possibilities using these small grounds (2.5" x 3.5" cards). Artist Trading Cards have world recognition and are a fun way to try art with low creative risk.
Journey 9 PRINTMAKING EXPLORATION
FOCUS: Techniques, Exploration of Printmaking, Anatomy of a Bike
Students will work on basic printmaking exploration and create 1 formal project. The formal project will be a black ink bicycle using found objects that replicate the anatomy of a bicycle.
Journey 10 SCULPTURE
FOCUS: Public Art Sculptures (Study), Reflection, Problem Solving
Students will work on 3 projects. One, Symbols of Self using model magic clay. two, found object tower/sculpture, three, a monochromatic sculpture inspired by the work of Louise Nevelson.
Journey C1 - ART EXPLORATION
FOCUS: Process of Art, Drawing Vocabulary, Exploration of Materials
Students will work on two projects. One, using inspiration from nature, students will create a resist painting with oil pastels and watercolour. Two, students will create a mini book of ink created drawings focusing on shapes and textures in nature.
Journey C2 - EMILY CARR STUDY
FOCUS: The Art of Emily Carr, Colour Harmony, Lines in Nature
Students will work on two projects. One, a Carr inspired landscape using mixed media. Two, a line focused artwork to demonstrate how texture can be created in art or to create movement.
Journey C3 - WEAVING
FOCUS: Textiles, Environmental Inspiration, Themes
Students will work on one project that will be a culmination of finding a theme or inspiration, choosing related materials and working with a variety of weaving techniques.

Students will explore drawing techniques related to still life. A variety of still life scenarios will provide opportunities for problem solving and practicing drawing techniques. Students will create a sampling of works based on their observations and will add other mediums to enhance their work.
Journey C6 - WATERCOLOUR
FOCUS: Understanding Materials, Exploration, Brush Skills
Students will begin to understand how to work with watercolour and develop brush skills using this delicate paint. There will be lots of skill development and a few small "finished" works to take away at the end.
